Let’s face it — most of us don’t read furniture care guides. We buy a nice piece, start using it, and that’s that. But if you’re using processed wood furniture (like the kind we make at Horizon), a little care can really go a long way.
It’s not complicated. You don’t need special cleaners or tools. Just a few simple habits that’ll keep your desk, wardrobe, or shelf looking good for years.
Here’s what actually helps:

1. Wipe Up Spills Fast
Processed wood doesn’t like water. If you spill something, don’t let it sit — wipe it up quickly. Use a dry or slightly damp cloth. That’s it.
Leaving water on the surface for too long (especially around the edges) can make it swell or bubble. Not great.

2. Skip the Fancy Cleaners
You don’t need sprays or polish. Just dust it now and then with a soft cloth. If something gets sticky, a little soap and water on a damp cloth does the trick — as long as you dry it off afterward.
Avoid strong cleaners or anything oily. Those can mess with the finish over time.

3. Don’t Drag It Around
Tempting as it is, dragging a desk or bookshelf across the floor isn’t good for the frame or joints. Try to lift it instead. If it’s heavy, grab a friend to help. Trust me — it’ll save you from scratches, wobbles, and loose screws later on.

4. Don’t Overload Drawers and Shelves
Processed wood is strong — but even strong furniture has limits. If you load up a drawer with too many heavy items, it’ll start to sag or stick. Same goes for shelves.
Stick the heavier stuff on the bottom and spread the rest out. Keeps everything balanced.

5. Protect the Top Surface
This one’s easy. Use coasters under cups, a mousepad under your mouse, and avoid writing directly on the surface with pressure — especially with ballpoint pens. Those tiny dents and stains add up over time.

6. Sunlight Isn’t Always Your Friend
If your furniture is parked near a window, be careful. Too much direct sun can fade the finish and dry out the materials. Curtains or blinds during the day can help a lot.

7. Check the Screws Occasionally
After a few months of use, handles might loosen, drawers may wobble, or doors might not close like they used to. That’s normal. Give the screws and fittings a quick check every now and then and tighten them if needed. It only takes a minute.

8. Be Kind to It
Don’t stand on it. Don’t slam drawers. Don’t use a knife on the surface. These are small things, but they make a big difference. Processed wood is built to last, but how you treat it matters.
To Wrap It Up
You don’t need to baby your furniture — just treat it with a bit of common sense. Clean it now and then, keep it dry, and don’t overload it. That’s really all there is to it.
