How to Keep Your Gaming or Ergonomic Chair in Good Shape

If you’ve ever sat in a worn-out chair, you know the difference a well-kept one makes. A squeaky wheel, a wobbly armrest, or a seat that sags — it’s not just annoying, it messes with your comfort. Whether yours is a flashy gaming throne or a sleek ergonomic seat, taking care of it isn’t complicated, but it’s something people often forget until it’s too late.

I’ve learned this the hard way — spilled tea on mine once, thought “I’ll clean it later.” A week later, the stain looked like modern art. Don’t be like me.

Give It a Quick Clean, Often

Dust, crumbs, pet hair… it all piles up faster than you think.

  • If it’s mesh or fabric, a quick vacuum with the soft brush attachment does the job.

  • If it’s leather or PU, just a damp cloth and a quick dry wipe is fine. A little leather conditioner every now and then will keep it from cracking.

And no, you don’t need fancy sprays for daily cleaning. Warm water and mild soap work just fine.

Keep the Sun and Snacks in Check

Direct sunlight is like slow-motion damage for chairs — fades the color and dries leather till it cracks. Try keeping it out of that glare if you can.

And about eating at your desk… look, I’m not here to judge (I’ve dropped enough chips between the seat and backrest myself), but a cheap seat cover or a quick cloth on your lap can save you trouble later. For fabric chairs, a fabric-protector spray can be worth the few extra bucks.

Don’t Ignore the Nuts and Bolts

Once every month or two, check the screws, bolts, and moving parts. Loose parts only get looser.

  • Tighten them before they start rattling.

  • If the wheels or swivel feel stiff, a tiny bit of lubricant works wonders.

  • Check the casters  — if it feels tight, clean the unwanted hairs rolling with the wheels.

Takes less than ten minutes, saves you a lot more than that in repairs.

Don’t Push Your Luck

Even solid chairs have limits.

  • Don’t lean back like you’re in a hammock unless it’s built for it.

  • Don’t push yourself up by the armrests every time — they’re not designed for that kind of force.

  • Avoid sitting on just one edge for hours; it warps the padding.

These sound like small things, but over time they make a big difference.

Do a Big Clean Once or Twice a Year

Pull the wheels off — you’ll probably find enough hair and dust to knit a sweater. Wipe everything down, wash removable covers, check for rust or tears.

If you spot something you can’t fix, get it repaired early. A small tear in the upholstery today is a full replacement in a year.

Bottom Line

Your chair’s with you for long stretches every day, whether it’s for work or gaming marathons. A little care here and there means it’ll stay comfortable, look better, and save you money in the long run. And trust me — future you will thank present you for not letting that first squeak turn into a full-blown wobble.
